Dog in ‘severely impacted’ community survived 9 days atop RV after Hurricane Ian

Admin

A sweet pooch, desperate to survive the ravages of Hurricane Ian rode out the storm atop an RV, and police officers think he might have been waiting for help for as long as nine days.

According to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, flooding had been prevalent in the River Acres community where “chest-deep waters” covered parts of the county. Winds in excess of 140 miles per hour and as much as 20 inches of rain made rescue attempts perilous.

Yesterday, a concerned DeSoto resident called about a dog who was stranded on the roof of an RV. The RV was located in the River Acres community…

Thankfully the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office was able to mobilize the boat and rescue the dog. The dog was turned over to DeSoto County Animal Control where it now has access to water, food and shelter.

Photos from the department show officers using a ladder to reach the dog, and although the dog had obviously lost a considerable amount of weight, he didn’t show to have had any injuries. The dog, a three to four year old ” black mouth cur and pitbull” mix has been gaining weight since his rescue, however his owner has not come forward.

Many thanks to our officers for their compassion and bravery.
