Abandoned pup melts and breaks hearts but looks at us with gentle and trusting eyes

Admin

At the Hillsborough County Pet Rescue Center in Tampa, Florida, we are hoping someone will want to help Leedo. (A2249814) He will melt and break your heart at the same time as he looks up at shelter volunteers with his trusting eyes and the quiet gentleness of his demeanor.

Sadly, neglect has taken a huge toll on Leedo’s undernourished body. He has multiple tumors suspected to be mast cell, and he is emaciated. On the positive side, however, he is heartworm negative.

Leedo was abandoned at an apartment by his owner. The now homeless boyfriend of the dog’s owner was able to get the dog out of the empty apartment and placed him in a crate, leaving him in a public area so someone would find and save him.

The staff at the shelter are amazed that, despite the horrible life poor Leedo must have been subjected to for an unknown length of time, he is still loving and trusting. When it was time for him to be walked and get outdoors, Leedo was excited to be leashed and very cooperative.

He is gentle, affectionate, listens well and is eager for attention. He has an amazing amount of energy and enjoys playing. He has even attended a couple playground sessions, being gentle/dainty and keeping to himself among the group.

Leedo does need some convincing not to grab. He grabbed the treat apron worn by a volunteer and continued to pull until he received a treat. He also roughly grabbed the treat, although with perseverance and holding it differently, he did relent and took it more gently. Yes, that is rude of Leedo, but with love and patience, he will learn that the treat is indeed his – he just has to learn to wait respectfully.

Information from the shelter volunteer:

“Leedo was excitedly wagging his stubby tail to come out. He walked close, looking back frequently to the play yard. He was eager for attention as soon as he was unleashed. He enjoyed pets and followed closely. He knows his commands well and is very treat motivated. He does take treats very roughly; even grabbing my apron and pulling for treats. All understandable; as he is still very underweight. He responded well to holding the treat in a way to force him to take them gently. He quickly forgot about treats after I removed my apron. We then went to the garden; where he explored, climbed rocks and frequently came close for pets. He has a medium energy and was very eager for attention and affection.”

It is not known how Leedo reacts to other dogs or cats. No information has been offered how he gets along with children.

The shelter is very crowded, and temporary foster homes are desperately needed. Surely, Leedo would raise his paw and shout “PICK ME” if someone were to volunteer to foster him or better yet – adopt.

Please contact the PRC to make an appt. to meet Leedo (A2249814).

The shelter is open 10-5 Monday thru Saturday by appointment or walk-in.
