Emporia, KS – Dozens of cats and dogs who were living in squalor have been rescued from a home in Central Emporia last Wednesday. The animals were suffering in unimaginable conditions. According to Humane Society of the Flint Hills director Stephanie Achille, urine, feces, and maggots covered most every surface inside the home. There was so much debris on the floors that it was “like mud,” and the air was so contaminated that it was difficult to breathe.
The house was occupied by 53-year-old Mariah Holloway and a total of 85 animals (83 cats and two dogs) were removed from the residence; one cat had to be humanely euthanized, reports KVOE News. Formal charges against Holloway are pending.
The shelter caring for the animals is hoping that people in the community will step up to help with adoptions and donations. Area residents interested in fostering, or providing food, litter, or other donations, can email the shelter at [email protected]. You can find the shelter on Facebook at this link.
