In Richmond, Virginia, the Richmond Police Department arrived at a home on Richdale Road last weekend to find two deceased adults. A German shepherd named Luca, had been shot alongside his owner inside the home. Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) reported that the dog and his owner had not been found for more than 20 hours after the shooting. Tragically, Luca’s owner died.
It’s a miracle that he survived [Luca]; we need another miracle to save him. Diagnostics show bullet fragments around his head and neck, but we can’t determine how much of the spine is affected without further imaging.”

Just a few days later, Luca was up and able to use all four legs. He seemed much brighter and wagged his tail whenever anyone approached his kennel. He visited Bush Veterinary Neurology Service and was being given time to see how much he improved with supportive hospitalization. If he declined at all, surgery would have been performed to remove the bullet fragments and then perform an MRI. Thanks to everyone at Virginia Veterinary Centers for taking such good care of him. It seems that miracles really do happen.

We are happy to announce that due to the compassionate care provided by RACC, VVC, and BVNS, Luca has shown much improvement and is now able to walk on his own!
UPDATE:
We are so excited to share this update! Luca was discharged from VVC late last night, and is in foster care with the ER veterinarian who has worked on him since day one. She will oversee his continued rehabilitation from her home where Luca will be comfy and spoiled and loved until he is completely healed. We will keep you posted on his availability for adoption in the future, until then, thank you so much for loving him and RACC
