Police tried to find KIng’s owner before bringing him to the South Suburban Humane Society in Matteson, but at the time had little luck. And so the sweet dog arrived at the shelter; his photo and the note were posted on social media, and animal advocates and followers of the animal protection organization sadly wondered what had happened that someone had to abandon their dog.
It turned out to be a short wait. On Wednesday afternoon, the dog’s owner arrived at the shelter. The woman told the staff she had suffered a major medical issue and had moved back in with her family. She had been trying to get back on her feet.
A family member had taken and abandoned her dog without her knowledge; the dog’s owner was devastated. She brought all of the dog’s food, toys and treats; it had been a tearful conversation coming to realize this woman loved her dog dearly.
At this time, the woman is trying to find a safe place for her dog, and it was at this time, one of the staff members stepped up to foster King at her house for a month or so until the woman hopefully can get back on her feet and properly care for her dog.
Every single day, every one of us has a choice to choose empathy and kindness. SSHS is grounded in both andwe choose kindness whenever possible (it’s always possible). We asked her if she’s willing to accept help from the public and she is a very proud person who is thinking about that. When we know, we will certainly let you know! Thank you to each one of you helping us do this work and we wouldn’t be able to offer this support to King and her without our communitie

Hundreds of comments were very supportive of the woman’s desperate plight and the gesture of kindness from one of the shelter’s staff volunteering to keep King safe for the next month until the dog’s owner can get her life on track again.
