In Midlothian, Virginia, this week the Sanctuary Rescue saved a very sweet 12-year-old beagle that had been surrendered to a local shelter. Unlike many surrenders however, Abby was left at the shelter with her bed, her toys, two bags of sweaters, 12 years of veterinarian records and her portrait.
Before making any judgments about Abby’s previous owners, the rescue organization posted an explanation, and it perhaps allow all of us to take pause and reflect that life doesn’t always go as planned.
We don’t know, didn’t meet, and had no interactions with her former family. From what we understand from the shelter there were some major life changes that prevented them from keeping their pets at this time and it wasn’t necessarily something a gofundme would fix. She’s in a wonderful foster home now that has a lot of senior dog experience. She will get great care, love, and affection while she’s with Sanctuary Rescue (as do all of our dogs), and she’ll be up for adoption once she’s seen our vet and we’ve gotten to know her a bit better

In fact, the rescue is considering hanging the dog’s portrait in their office to remind everyone to be humble, to give grace, to be loving and kind towards others since we don’t always know what is going on in someone else’s life and to lend a helping hand whenever we can.
Abby’s story has been going viral, and comments from hundreds of people reading the dog’s plight, have told their own stories when life threw them curveballs they obviously were not expecting.
As for the beautiful and sweet Abby, she is loving life in her foster home and has made herself at home. Yesterday, she was very busy testing out all of the dog beds in the home. Her foster mom told everyone, Abby thinks she is Goldilocks.
Wishing Abby’s former family the best and wishing Abby a wonderful and loving new home.
