A juvenile in central Virginia faces charges of shooting and killing five horses and injuring three others. The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office had been notified on Tuesday by animal control officers that the horses had been shot in Spout Spring.
According to AbcNews, authorities found five of the horses fatally shot and the other three wounded. Veterinary care was immediately given to the wounded horses.
On Wednesday, the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office investigation led to the arrest of a juvenile. Because of the minor’s age, he has not been named, but is facing felony charges of “multiple counts” of animal cruelty.
Appomattox Animal Control had begun an investigation into these animals. Upon closer examination by a veterinarian and Animal Control, they realized that some animals had been shot and some of the animals were deceased. So, our investigation became involved, and we developed information yesterday that led to the arrest of a juvenile for these crimes.

The owner of the horses had been away; a citizen in the area reported the horses lying down and called Animal Control. The surviving horses are currently in the care of Agrarian Veterinarian Services.
It is also possible other animals were killed or injured. An investigation continues.
Donations to help the surviving horses can be made to the Chestnut Mountain Feed Co. in the name of “Double Bridges – Help the Horses”. Donations can also be sent to the Agrarian Veterinary Services.
