‘Hershel’ has been at Ohio shelter for 2,000 days: Please help him find a home

Admin

In Mentor, Ohio, the Lake Humane Society has spent more than 2,000 days with Hershel at their organization. Everyone agrees this sweet dog deserves to be in his own home and with his own family.

His past might break your heart, but that is the past; here is what happened:

When Hershel was just a year-old, he entered into another shelter after he was found starving and frostbitten along with several other dogs in the same heartbreaking condition.

Hershel was living outdoors before he was rescued at 1-year-old. It was winter, during a polar vortex when Hershel was saved. He was skin and bones, he was shivering, and he was scared. After medical examination it was confirmed, Hershel was severely frostbitten and close to starvation.

For the first year of his life Hershel had never known warmth, he had never known shelter. Hershel had never known the feeling of a full belly or kind human touch. It didn’t happen overnight, but Hershel is now a healthy, 76-pound, 6-year-old boy. Hershel amazes us every single day with his contagiously happy and optimistic outlook on life.

And now five years later, Hershel still doesn’t have a home. Why? In April, Hershel arrived at Lake Humane Society from another shelter where he had spent most of his life. He is well-behaved, but his big brown eyes lose their shine when people just pass him by.

The mixed breed lap dog is gentle and sincere. He’s never had a real home, and has done well learning canine citizen skills at Cold Nose Companions Dog Training. As a special treat, Hershel went to a sleepover this month, and for the first time in his life, spent a night in a real home.

He didn’t even have one accident. He was a complete gentleman, grateful for the simple thinks like sunbathing in a fenced yard and curling up on the couch for belly rubs.

Maybe not stay in the back as the dog in front of you digs a hole?
