At the BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, the prospects of helping an 11-month-old puppy trust a human again is quickly fading away. Scarlett’s foster parents had originally stepped up to save the puppy from certain euthanasia two weeks ago, but they have sadly expressed their inexperience in dealing with a dog who is so very scared and shut down.
Scarlet entered the shelter on May 10, 2023 as a stray. She weighed 45 pounds and is listed as a Labrador retriever mix. When she entered the shelter, she cowered into the corner and refused treats; both flinching and trembling as anyone even approached her.
The puppy had been on the euthanasia list for May 15, however a BARC foster had stepped forward and saved her in the nick of time.
And now she’s back. It’s not Scarlet’s fault; at this time she has no idea that humans can be kind. An experienced foster parent is needed; someone who understands how to properly deal with dogs like Scarlett.
