In Mantua, Ohio, 158 deceased dogs were discovered in the home which belonged to the founder of Canine Lifeline. A search warrant had been executed after authorities received a tip that the founder had a pending animal cruelty charge in another jurisdiction.
According to the Portage Animal Protective League, the organization’s Humane Investigations Department entered the home and discovered 146 dead dogs in various stages of decomposition. Many of the dogs had been left confined to their crates. A continuing investigation found 12 more dead dogs in another home.
In a press release on June 22, 2023, Parma police stated Barbara A. Wible, 68, the founder of the rescue Canine Lifeline Inc., remained hospitalized as the result of a fall at her home.
It had been a Amazon delivery person who reported packages had been piling up outside of Wible’s home for over a week. He also told police he had looked in the window and saw a “bunch of flies inside the house,” prompting officials to do a welfare check on Wible.
When officers entered the home, they found Wible on the floor and helped her out of the house to the hospital. Animal control found 24 dogs alive in that home; 12 more dogs were already deceased and had been kept in cages. The dogs were transported to an emergency veterinarian – 22 dogs are now recovering from the severe neglect. It is not known why Wible had so many dogs at her private residence.
Kron 4News reports Wible’s animal cruelty charges remain pending before a Cuyahoga County grand jury and more charges are expected. An investigation continues.
