In the Village of Liberty in New York, a dog continued to bark for hours to help rescuers find him and his friend; both dogs trapped in an underground culvert box.
According to the Facebook page for the Village of Liberty Police Department, the incident occurred on Saturday, July 29 when Liberty Police Chief Steven D’Agata, heard a dog barking and followed the sound to the underground culvert. The dogs were in an area of the tunnel inaccessible because of fear that the structure could collapse.
Officers from the police department and from animal control used a different location and then slid down a seven-foot concrete wall, enabling them to access the dogs 40 feet into the culvert while following the barking.
One of the dogs had been holding onto the ledge by his claws to avoid falling into the water. The other dog had been the one doing the barking and refused to leave his pal. When the rescuers arrived, the dogs barked and acted aggressively as if protecting each other, but with the assistance of a Good Samaritan, the dogs were safely rescued.
This was a beautiful example of canine loyalty at its highest level. At one point, the female literally jumped into the deeper water to protect her friend. Officer Jones was fearless and we knew together we would not fail. My appreciation to Tom Lewis and another fine young man who also assisted.
The dogs were lifted seven feet up a concrete wall to the safety of the ground. Both dogs appear to be in good health.
A big thank you to DCO Joanne Gerow and Tom Lewis for working together with LPD to rescue these dogs. Anyone who may know the owner of the dogs is asked to contact Joanne Gerow at Catskill Animal Rescue 845-747-9450.
