In April 2015, the Greenville Humane Society brought a two-month-old stray puppy into their care. Within four days, the puppy named Nala had been adopted. For about a year, her new owners would bring her into the vaccine clinic for services, but after that, no one saw Nala again.
Fast forward to June 2023 when the non profit organization received a call about a dog whose microchip registered to the Greenville Humane Society; the dog had been removed from a home in Hilton Head due to severe neglect. The photos were heartbreaking, and her microchip traced her back to the GHS. Without question, Nala was coming back and would be given the care she desperately needed.
When Nala arrived, her condition was even worse than her pictures. She suffered from scabies which had caused significant hair loss, plus a severe skin infection over her entire body. Her thyroid levels were very low, and it was clear she needed emergency care.
Who would have ever thought Nala would wind up like this? It seems Nala had been rehomed a number of times since she left as a puppy in 2015. Who would have guessed how her life turned so tragic and how so many people turned their backs on such a sweet dog?
Life is different for Nala now. She has been at the rescue for several weeks. Here is her update:
I have learned to trust people again, and my hair is slowly starting to grow back. I love being outside and sunbathing in warm patches of grass, and I play well with other dogs. I consider myself to be more of a couch potato, so I would prefer a quieter home without a lot of commotion, where I can relax and enjoy the peacefulness of life. I love treats and cozy beds, and once I trust you I enjoy snuggling and maybe even an occasional belly rub! I am really hoping my forever family comes for me soon, so if you think that’s you, please spend some time with me today!
Nala has been cleared for adoption and her coat continues to improve. She will have to remain on a thyroid medication for the rest of her life, but it is very inexpensive. She runs in the yard during play group. There isn’t a dog that she hasn’t loved. Her favorite thing is a fluffy blanket; something soft against her skin until her coat grows back. She’s fantastic on a leash and enjoys going for walks. She doesn’t really understand the purpose of toys or being petted; likely due to the neglect she has suffered. With time, she’ll start to learn that she deserves all the toys and pets the world has to offer.
Please share Nala’s story with family, friends and social media contacts. We all eagerly await the happy photos when she leaves the rescue with her new family – we know the perfect family is out there waiting to meet her. Please help them find Nala.
