Helping the pets who have been burned and lost during fires on island of Maui

The Maui Humane Society shared a heartbreaking post Friday on their Facebook page asking for the public’s help.

We are expecting an inundation of hundreds of animals who have been burned, lost during the evacuation process.

Both the Maui Humane Society and the Hawaiian Humane Society are asking for the public’s help with supplies and funding in order to care for the animals currently being rescued. Even before the fires, the shelters have been overcrowded, and it is critical these organizations receive the supplies they need to help the animals being found with serious burns or wandering around the areas not able to find food or comfort.

Hundreds of animals are expected to be found, and it is quite possible many will need emergency help for burns and smoke inhalation. It is hoped people in nearby communities can offer temporary homes to these animals until they can be reunited with their families. People outside of Maui can send supplies via the shelter’s Amazon Wishlist.

The Maui Fires Pets Help Group is helping connect people. Please report all lost and found pets at www.petcolovelost.org. Please post if you need help and if you can provide assistance.

For donating supplies and food, try buying from the Maui local stores of Target or Petsmart, and you can get same day or next day delivery. Maui Humane Society is located at 1350 Mehameha Loop, Puunene, HI 96784.

For those needing a bit of hope and good news rising out of the ashes of nearly complete devastation, the Maui Humane Society shared a story of rescue with their supporters.

The sweet dog Roman had been with a dog sitter when the fires in Lahaina began on Tuesday. The dog sitter had no choice but to jump into the waters of Lahaina to save them, but he did not jump in with her. Roman ran off terrified down front street.

On Thursday, Roman was found by Goodfellow Bros staff. Roman was then turned over to a Good Samaritan and taken to Ma’alaea harbor; from there he went with one of the humane enforcement officers to be taken to Maui Humane Society for medical care. He was burned on his paws, legs, back and body. Roman was microchipped, his owners were called, and they immediately came to the shelter to take their baby boy home. Roman is now safe and with his ohana and doing well according to his owners.

Please help these organizations by donating. The Maui Humane Society has set up a Facebook Fundraiser. The public can also donate on the humane society’s website.

From the Hawaiian Humane Society:

“Our hearts are with the Maui community and our friends at Maui Humane Society. Even though we are separate organizations, they are our partners in championing and advocating for our state’s animals. We are committed to sharing with our O‘ahu community their needs and updates as the situation progresses on Maui.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: As of now, Maui Humane Society’s greatest need is monetary donations. They have already received a ton of supplies of donations which they are working to distribute, and Amazon donations will take time to ship and may cause issues with their small post office. With monetary donations, they can provide ongoing medical care, shelter, and supplies for the animals who need it. Because their website is experiencing high volumes of traffic, you can donate here:
