Missing sheep found 5 years later living with pack of kangaroos gets his first shearing

Meet Sugar, the sheep, who just received a long awaited shearing, and if one happens to be a sheep, how great losing 28 pounds of heavy wool must have felt. It was Forever Friends Animal Rescue and a group of animal lovers who found Sugar living among kangaroos near Sugarloaf Reservoir near Melbourne, Australia more than six months ago.

According to Melbourne Water, Sugar is believed to have wandered away at least five years ago. Obviously, he chose to live off the grid with a pack of kangaroos; that is until Georgia Duncan, Melbourne Water’s Water Supply Operator, spotted him. Sugar was finally captured and has been temporarily rehomed at Forever Friends Animal Sanctuary.

In the catchments surrounding our city’s reservoirs, wildlife is abundant and diverse, especially on the walking tracks. Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, black-tailed wallabies, echidnas, kangaroos and an abundance of other wildlife. But Melbourne Water staff were surprised to learn about lost Sugar, far from home.

Sugar’s rescue took six months of meticulous planning, and details came together after weeks of strategizing. The compassionate rescuers made sure to safeguard surrounding wildlife while carefully ensuring Sugar’s safety.

On Friday Sugar underwent a professional shearing to remove the excessive wool growth he has experienced during his time in the reservoir. He underwent a “checkup to ensure he’s doing okay,” also.

After two attempts the thick coat of woll Sugar had grown out over the past five years was sheared off.

Check out the photo; it took three volunteers to hold up the sheep’s previous wooly coat.

The rescue operation was supported by Forever Friends Animal Rescue and Vets For Compassion. Sugar will remain at the sanctuary until he receives his health certificate and then head home to Duncan. It appears the kangaroos took good care of Sugar, and isn’t that what counts?

Heroes just come in all sizes and shapes.
