In Ipswich, Massachusetts, an eight-year-old Lipizzaner gelding named Valcour had quite the day on Monday. Valcour fell through the floor of his stall and was trapped in between levels. His owner called for help, and specialized Large Animal Rescue team at MASSACHUSETTS SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS (MSPCA) rushed to the scene along with first responders to help him.
The call that a horse had partially fallen through the floor of the barn sent police and fire departments over to help free the 1,200 pound horse. Valcour’s two back legs were hanging into the room below. Rescuers assisted in holding on to the horse’s body, and he was sedated to avoid injuries to both horse and the rescue teams.
For four hours and with the help of the Ipswich Fire Department, SRH Veterinary Services and the Northeast Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team, Valcour survived his harrowing experience and is expected to make a full recovery. His owners have already said he’s been walking around normally.
The rescue team offered specialized Large Animal Rescue Training that uses innovative rescue equipment to conduct hands-on workshops. The next training is scheduled for June 23 and is open to members of the public as well as first responders to attend.
