1500 days at shelter full of life pup has not lost hope of being adopted

Admin

It has been four years; almost 1,500 days spent in the confines of a shelter. The Pennsylvania SPCA is a place meant to be a temporary haven; a place to be safe, but for Smokey it has become the place he calls “home,” yet it’s not home. He sleeps in a kennel, and there are lots and lots of other dogs joining his quest to be someone’s one and only.

Smokey was rescued by the PSPCA from cruel conditions on November 10, 2020. He wasn’t very happy in his old life, but all of the kind people at the shelter have made a huge difference. Once he became a bit more accustomed to shelter life, he learned about chasing balls, chewing on toys and playtime. Then came going for walks and food rewards – oh goody!

When Smokey first got to the shelter, things were really tough. He didn’t understand much; likely no one spent any time teaching him dog basics, but since then he has learned some very neat tricks like “place” and “stay” and “settle.” All of this has made Smokey a better canine citizen.

As each day blurs into the next with barely any adoption interest, the staff would have expected Smokey to have lost hope – but that he has not. He wakes up in the morning ready to live his life. He is playful and alive, and he loves greeting the staff and learning new things and meeting new people. It’s just that no one has come to the shelter to adopt him. Maybe tomorrow? Maybe it could be you? Maybe you know of someone looking to adopt Smokey?

He is a playful and incredibly intelligent dog. He loves to learn and be in close proximity to his friends. But amidst the laughter and the fun he brings to us, Smokey must yearn for something more.

He deserves a place where his toys will be scattered across the floor, where laughter will fill the air, and where love will know no bounds. Not the four walls of a kennel.

Perhaps, you can be the one to give Smokey the second chance he so desperately craves – the chance to love and be loved by a family in return.

Please ask about him today.

Smokey waits. And we will continue to wait with him. We just hope it won’t be much longer. At times Smokey seems to be staring off into the distance. He’s probably wondering where his family is; we wonder too.

His people have to be out there somewhere. Please share to help us find them.

And one more important part of Smokey’s life at the shelter has been Carol:

Meet Smokey’s bestie, Carol.

Carol has been working with Smokey since the very beginning. That’s 1247 days.

This year will mark four years in our care.

Carol has been ensuring Smokey gets the enrichment he needs, the mental stimulation, and that he is comfy and cozy while he waits for his family.

We are sure she didn’t think it would be this long of a wait. We didn’t think so either.

But, his bestie is still here, advocating for him every day. And we will be too. Until we can find his family.

Can you help Smokey?
