Rescue Dog Who Lived in a New York Shelter for 1800 Days Always Carries His Beloved Bowl for Comfort

Unusual Comfort: A Bowl Instead of a Toy

One thing that most dogs instinctively seek for comfort is a soft, plush toy. This is a familiar sight for anyone who has ever shared their life with a canine companion.

However, this reliance on comfort objects becomes even more pronounced in the stressful environment of animal shelters, where many pups are confined to small, often barren spaces with little to keep them company aside from a single, simple toy.

A shelter environment is typically filled with the cacophony of dogs barking, each one expressing their anxiety and longing for help, making it an incredibly challenging place to endure for extended periods.

The same harsh reality was the daily experience of Wally, a sweet dog who resided at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (TOHAS) in New York for an astonishingly long period – over 1800 days, which equates to nearly five long years.

But, unlike the majority of dogs who seek solace in a cuddly plush toy, Wally often chose something entirely different for comfort, a peculiar habit that deeply surprised and touched his compassionate rescuers.

A Peculiar Attachment: Clinging to His Food Bowl

Wally’s rescuers were deeply moved and somewhat perplexed to discover that he had developed a strong attachment to his food bowl, using it as his primary source of comfort and security. Unlike any other dog at the shelter, Wally would carry his bowl around with him constantly, a tangible symbol of his emotional distress.

This sweet and gentle pup had languished at the shelter for over five long years, and the kind-hearted shelter staff in New York grew increasingly worried about his well-being as the days, weeks, months, and years passed.

Over the extended period he spent confined within the shelter walls, Wally’s anxiety levels visibly increased. The constant noise of barking dogs and the restrictive space understandably took a toll on his emotional state. His dedicated rescuers did everything within their power to try and alleviate his distress and make him feel even a fraction of the comfort he deserved.

They implemented various enrichment activities and offered him affection, but it became increasingly apparent that what Wally truly longed for – a loving forever home – remained elusive. That simple food bowl he carried with him became his only consistent source of solace in that challenging environment.

Everyone at the shelter was heartbroken to witness his peculiar attachment, a poignant reminder of the emotional toll his prolonged stay was taking. And tragically, this wasn’t the first time Wally’s heart had been broken by the promise of a home that ultimately didn’t last.

Since he was first brought to the shelter, the dedicated rescuers had managed to find at least two potential adoptive homes for him, offering glimmers of hope for a brighter future. However, in a devastating turn of events, Wally was returned to the shelter both times, leaving him even more emotionally fragile.

Holding Onto Hope: Despite Heartbreak

These returns were certainly not due to any behavioral issues on Wally’s part. The rescuers knew him to be a remarkably cheerful and outgoing pup, full of love and potential.

Each time he was returned to the shelter, however, Wally would come back a little different, his anxiety noticeably heightened. It became increasingly clear that he was struggling to bear the emotional burden of his prolonged confinement and repeated disappointments. He yearned for a normal life, the simple joys of companionship and a place to truly call his own.

Even though his heart was undoubtedly heavy with the absence of a loving family, his compassionate rescuers made a conscious effort to cheer him up whenever possible, and thankfully, their efforts often brought a temporary spark back to his eyes.

He is an incredibly sweet-natured dog who genuinely enjoys the simple pleasures of running outside and engaging in playful interactions with other pups and the shelter staff members. Wally is also easily won over by a tasty treat, happily trading his cherished bowl or a toy for a moment of delicious indulgence.

His rescuers are immensely grateful to see the positive impact that simply being outdoors has on his demeanor. It’s as if he transforms into a completely different dog when he’s given the chance to run freely and play, momentarily shedding the weight of his confinement.

Despite the numerous obstacles and heartbreaks Wally has faced during his long stay at the shelter, his dedicated rescuers refuse to give up hope. They remain steadfast in their belief that he will eventually find a loving forever family who will see the wonderful dog he truly is and provide him with the peaceful and happy life he so richly deserves after such a difficult journey.
