Rescue work often involves unpredictability. Sometimes, rescuers set out to save one animal and end up encountering another in dire need. This is precisely what happened when California rescuers stumbled upon Prince, a tiny Chihuahua mix, during a search for a different stray dog.
Prince was discovered alone, limping and struggling along a desert road. His posture conveyed defeat, and his eyes seemed to plead for help. The compassionate team from The Animal Rescue Center Of California was en route to Thermal, a location where a stray German Shepherd had been reported. Their initial mission was to locate and assist this larger breed dog.
However, their search proved fruitless. “We were looking for a stray German Shepherd in Thermal who was nowhere to be found,” the rescue shared in their video.
Instead of their intended target, they encountered Prince. The sight was deeply concerning: a small dog, weighing only about twelve pounds, appeared utterly defeated. He was painfully thin, visibly scared, and clearly malnourished.
The rescuers offered Prince food and comforted him with kind words. It quickly became apparent that Prince wasn’t just wandering; he was actively seeking assistance. He was in significant pain, and his limping indicated a serious problem with his leg.
After safely securing Prince, his rescuers transported him to an animal hospital for a comprehensive examination. The results of this examination revealed the true extent of his injuries, far surpassing their initial assessment.
X-rays confirmed that Prince had suffered a broken femur, a severe injury causing intense pain and requiring immediate intervention. “He was limping from a broken femur. He was in pain and needed surgery,” the Center explained.
His condition was deemed urgent, and surgery was identified as his only chance for a full recovery and a life free from pain. Following the surgical procedure, the veterinary team decided to keep Prince at the hospital for a period of physical therapy, ensuring proper healing and rehabilitation.

Fortunately, Prince’s surgery was successful. He remained under the care of the hospital staff for approximately two weeks, where he underwent physical therapy and received attentive monitoring.
