The Struggles of Black Pitties
Black shelter Pitties often face an uphill battle in finding forever homes. Their dark coat color, unfortunately, can lead to negative stereotypes and discrimination. As a result, many of these dogs remain overlooked and eventually face euthanasia. Arlo, a black Pittie mix, was nearing his end at a local shelter in Bakersfield, California, when a compassionate woman stepped in to save his life.
A Second Chance
Donna Clark, from Soul 2 Soul Animal Rescue, learned about Arlo’s dire situation and immediately agreed to take him in. Despite the challenges associated with finding homes for black Pitties, Clark was determined to give Arlo a chance. Arlo quickly endeared himself to everyone at the rescue with his goofy and energetic personality. He soon found a loving family, but unfortunately, the adoption didn’t last long. The family returned Arlo due to concerns about his high energy level and potential interactions with their children.
Overcoming Adversity
Clark was heartbroken to see Arlo back at the shelter, especially after he had finally found a home. Arlo, confused and disheartened, exhibited signs of depression. However, a second chance came in the form of a foster home with an experienced caregiver. In this nurturing environment, Arlo gradually began to regain his old self. His playful and affectionate nature resurfaced, signaling that he was ready for another adoption.
A Happy Ending
Clark and the Soul 2 Soul Animal Rescue team were determined to find Arlo a family that could provide him with the love, attention, and exercise he needed. Their efforts paid off when a woman came to meet Arlo and instantly fell in love with his sweet personality. She didn’t hesitate to make him a part of her family.

Despite the challenges he faced, his unwavering love and playful nature eventually won the hearts of his rescuers and his new family.
