Chiquitita, a gentle and affectionate pit bull blend, yearns for her forever home after spending an astonishing 650 days at the Watauga Humane Society in North Carolina. Despite waiting patiently for nearly two years (650 days), her recent adoption didn’t work out, leaving her back at the shelter and eager for a loving family to call her own.
Chiquitita had been adopted in December 2023, but sadly had to be returned just a few months later. Returning this senior was not an easy decision for her adopters, and after careful consideration, this was the best decision for both the family and the dog.
Referred to as Chicky, for short, she arrived to Watauga HS as a transfer from another shelter. She does have some arthritis which precludes her from some physical challenges, but don’t many old people have a little hitch in their step which in no way hinders their ability to get around, love and be loved?
At 13 years old, Chiquitita embodies the spirit of a senior sweetheart. She may not have the boundless energy of a puppy, but her wisdom and love shine through in her kind eyes and gentle demeanor. The shelter staff describe her as a true snuggler, content to spend hours curled up beside you, soaking up attention. She still enjoys going for walks and exploring the outdoors, but at her own relaxed pace.
Chiquitita has seen a lot in her life. She’s a calm and loving companion who deserves a peaceful retirement home filled with warmth and understanding. It breaks our hearts to see her back here after waiting so long for a family.”

Returning a dog to the shelter can be challenging, but it’s important to remember that sometimes, not every match is perfect. While the reasons for Chiquitita’s return aren’t publicly known, the shelter emphasizes that finding her the right fit remains their top priority.
We want to be transparent about Chiquitita’s situation. This doesn’t reflect on her in any way. We believe her perfect family is still out there, and we’re determined to help them find each other.
