Senior in horrible condition yet nearly blind dog came into shelter as a stray

Admin

At the Orange County Animal Service in Orlando, Florida, a senior pup in horrible condition arrived at the shelter on Wednesday after he was brought in as a stray. He has been named Dell and needs out of the shelter immediately.

Dell has either been extremely neglected, or he has been missing from his family for a long period of time. A volunteer describes Dell’s condition.

“His fur is matted. He has a mass on his rump. His eyes are severely crusted with a bad discharge. He has a terrible smell coming from his face. He is either completely blind or has some visual impairment; he is walking into things. The shelter vet had a difficult time looking at his corneas due to the eye discharge.”

Dell is estimated to be 12-year-old and weighs 16 pounds. He has not been neutered, but tested negative for heartworms.

His shelter notes include the following information:

“Mucoid ocular discharge caked into fur all over face. Skin raw and ulcerated below eyes; no to very little eyelids, does not appear to be able to close eyes. Mucoid film covering eyes completely.

Geriatric, assessment: severe eye discharge, suspect dry eye, suspect blind or visually impaired… High priority tech exam w/DVM to examine after face has been cleaned and trimmed – update-examination revealed ulcerated eyelid and possible eroded skin tissue around eyes with some cloudiness amidst severe mucoid eye discharge bilaterally…

Dog was eating treats and compliant without appearing lethargic or otherwise compromised.

Excessively long nails.”

Dell’s face has been cleaned with a moist warm cloth and shaved matting around his eyes and face as best as a tech was able. His feet have been shaved and  the matting between his paw pads cut away. He has been administered medication for infections and pain. At the current time, Dell is wearing an ecollar as he tried to “rub his eyes with his paws.”

He is at Orange County Animal Service located at 2769 Conroy Road, Orlando, Florida. Make sure to reference A442550.

Dell needs to be rescued immediately. Please note he is not scheduled for euthanasia, but the shelter is currently monitoring his condition and is under “Y Review.”
