In the largest local surrender of dogs the MSPCA-Angell has ever known, 60 Boxers arrived on Tuesday from a single residence to the rescue organization’s Merrimac location. The dogs range in age from newborn puppies to seniors.
According to the Merrimac Police Chief, an animal welfare investigation had been ordered by Windham Police in New Hampshire after reports were received about hoarding and too many dogs on one property. With the assistance of police and the MSPCA, the 60 dogs were voluntarily surrendered by the homeowner.
The team scrambled to find space for the dogs and have been working hard to do initial medical evaluations in order to get an understanding of what support they need. The rescue organization is committed to giving them a fresh start, but cannot do it alone.
For those looking to help during this stressful time, donations and foster homes will be a lifeline. It is expected the cost of their care will exceed $10,000, and some of the dogs will need to spend several weeks recuperating before they’re ready for adoption.
