A canine conundrum that captivated a community has finally reached a happy ending. After eluding capture for months, the “dog with a box on its head” has been caught and is now safe at the local animal shelter.
The dog, affectionately named “Bear” by shelter staff, first garnered attention in Mobile, Alabama, when he was spotted roaming with a box like container stuck on his head. The image of this bewildered pup, believed to be a Cane Corso, quickly went viral, sparking concern and a search effort.
According to the Mobile County Animal Shelter, employees, volunteers and members of the community had been trying to trap Bear for nearly a year, but no one could get close enough to help free him. Shelter staff had been working with a local veterinarian, who had been making plans to tranquilize the dog in order to remove the box. His headwear, though a hindrance, seemed to serve as an unexpected armor against capture attempts, however perseverance paid off.
Shelter volunteer Martin Miller managed to corner Bear and safely remove the box. Thankfully, the ordeal left Bear unharmed, though undoubtedly a little bewildered. And although Bear did run away, his rescuers had no intention of deserting him.
And then less than a week later, Bear was finally caught.
It was the City of Mobile Animal Services Facebook who updated us with the happy news:
