At the Second Chance Adoption League in Morris Plains, New Jersey, an adoptable – well sorta – two-year-old Chihuahua had been described as “demonic” needed a special home, and it is believed there was someone out there for Prancer.
Ariel Davis, who lives in New Haven, Conn. had been browsing through Facebook when she spotted the rather odd adoption listing for Prancer. Actually, it would have been pretty difficult not to smile, smirk and scratch one’s head at Tyfanee Fortuna’s brutally honest description of the little guy.
“I’ve tried for the last several months to post this dog for adoption and make him sound …palatable. The problem is, he’s just not. There’s not a very big market for neurotic, man hating, animal hating, children hating dogs that look like gremlins. But I have to believe there’s someone out there for Prancer, because I am tired and so is my family. Every day we live in the grips of the demonic Chihuahua hellscape he has created in our home.”
The tongue-in-cheek description of Prancer reminded Ariel of a Chihuahua and Jack Russel terrier mix she adopted several years prior who had the same neuroses as this guy. Sadly, she had to surrender the dog named Doodle and her other dog due to health issues. And it has taken three years for Ariel to again become confident she is ready for the responsibility and nearly everyone in her community and her sponsors agreed.
And then there were the strict qualifications needed to adopt Prancer which included no other dogs, cats, men, or children to stress him. That also worked for Ariel.
Now mix that with the dog’s increased fame forcing the rescue organization to be even more discerning, as they wanted to make sure someone didn’t want him just to use him for the publicity and media attention.
“We nervously arranged a meeting, but would Prancer agree with our choice? Ariel showed up with a platter of his favorite foods to make a great first impression on him, and was respectful of his space and giving him time to warm up and trust. She listened to our decompression advice and training tips to help him be the best little devil he can be and has been in constant contact reporting his progress this past week. We are happy to report they are getting along great and he’s been her constant companion and looks so happy and relaxed in all his photos! As with all our adopted dogs, we will always be here as a resource for advice or help as he continues to settle in, and at any time during their hopefully long life together, but we could not be more pleased with how wonderful he is doing so far. So Farewell New Jersey Devil, you are Connecticut’s problem now!”
The Second Chance Adoption League hopes Prancer’s story has inspired thousands to adopt the overlooked underdogs.
“And shelters and rescues: embrace what makes the dogs in your care unique and get creative in marketing them to the right audience… all you have to do is catch the attention of the one perfect person to change their lives!”
