Michigan woman who broke her puppy’s bones and threw him in river takes plea deal for animal cruelty

In Macomb County, Michigan, the 26-year-old woman who broke her puppy’s bones and threw him repeatedly into the Clinton River in January has negotiated a plea deal. Amber Sunde is accused of animal abuse.

Sunde had reportedly broken the puppy’s back legs and fractured his skull. At one point radiographs showed his front leg had been broken and did not heal properly. And not only did Sunde repeatedly beat him, she also threw him into the river.

The Detroit Pit Crew Rescue rescued the puppy named Lux. The abuse the puppy endured in his short life had been egregious:

“One of the witnesses said that every time she would throw him into the river he would crawl out to her, so even though he suffered horrific abuse at her hands, he still crawled to her, he will wanted to be with her,” Theresa Sumpter, the executive director of the rescue organization stated.

Under the care of the rescue, Lux recovered, although he will need to have his leg amputated sometime in the future. He has since been adopted by one of the officers involved in his rescue, but he remains timid – especially if anyone near him raises their voice. He has also been renamed Finn.

“… fast movements he’ll urinate on himself. He crouches down a lot. He shakes. He is scared… How much abuse did that dog endure behind closed doors?”

And now Sunde will be sentenced next week, after having been diagnosed with mental illness, and although there has to always be compassion for people with mental illnesses, animal advocates also think there should be consequences.

The Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido stated Sunde is required to do counseling, take medication, report to mental health court weekly and pay $6,000 in restitution,  reports Fox News. A judge will decide Sunde’s fate next week.

According to the Detroit Pit Crew Rescue:

JUSTICE FOR LUX!
“We are asking that everyone please send emails to:
ATTN Judge James Biernat, Jr. to [email protected] and respectfully ask that the Judge throws out the plea deal which was provided by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office and that he sentences the defendant appropriately. We are asking for:
-Jail time
-No more owning animals
-Continued mental health treatment
-Restitution be paid
-A felony conviction for animal abuse that remains on her record
In addition to the above we certainly hope that Amber Sunde has general remorse for the pain and suffering she inflicted upon innocent Lux.”
