At the Iredell County Animal Services, the dogs and cats got to celebrate Halloween as young ghosts, goblins and superheroes entered the shelter bringing treats for the animals. No tricks from humans mind you – that is except for “sit, stay” or maybe a high five from a furry paw.
The children in the area were able to celebrate the fun event at the shelter bringing a lot of happy barks and purrs to the dogs and cats. Of course, parents of the Trick or Treaters were welcome, and about 75 children visited the Statesville, North Carolina shelter to hand out treats.
Shelter volunteers had stocked the dog and cat treats in candy bags all ready for the children to hand them out.
According to StatesvilleNews, the event was a huge success. It is hoped the visit by the children and their parents will encourage new volunteers and even result in more adoptions. For many of the people who attended, it was their first visit to the shelter.
“We talked to people today a lot about our rabies clinics, which are the second Tuesday of every month. We’re hoping to maybe instill an interest in somebody that possibly would want to come and volunteer or foster. We didn’t want to decorate because we wanted them to see the shelter as it is; we wanted them to be the decoration.”

The shelter has 38 animals out for foster — two dogs and the rest are cats or kittens. In the summer, the amount of foster homes more than doubles. Since August, the shelter has also had a “weekend getaway” program in which dogs get to go for the weekend to a home to get into a different environment.
