Our hearts ache at the bittersweet ending for 14-year-old Jade who was dumped at a local animal shelter in central North Carolina on Tuesday dressed in her Christmas sweater. As volunteers from the Doxie by Proxy Rescue were preparing for Thanksgiving, a call came in asking someone to hurry to the shelter. Within 30 minutes, Jade was cuddled in their arms.
According to the shelter, Jade had been surrendered to the shelter to be euthanized wearing her Christmas sweater.
“Our vet will check her out in the morning and hopefully get her scheduled to get her very rotten teeth fixed. And we plan to get her a brand new Christmas sweater for her new life ahead…”

All night Jade was loved on and spoiled, but life doesn’t always go as planned. Sadly, Jade passed away in loving arms Wednesday morning, after what appears to have been a cardiac event. In the world of rescue, despite the best efforts and the kindest actions to undo the cruelty of humans – even for a few hours, come the heartbreaking losses.
“Our hearts are heavy, but we are comforted by the fact that she wasn’t in the shelter. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and donations for Jade… And we are comforted knowing that this morning Jade is running free at the bridge wearing a beautiful new sweater.”
