Update: Dog who chewed off her back leg after being tied and couldn’t move heading to Utah sanctuary

Admin

Bella, the dog had a sad story to tell; hers had been one of survival, but the trauma she underwent still requires additional emotional healing. It is hoped that a certain someone can put Bella’s bad memories behind her one day. The Saginaw County Animal Care and Control of Michigan is helping Bella find her new path forward.

Bella was rescued in August when a mail carrier on his route had been stopped by a concerned citizen who spotted the suffering dog in a nearby backyard. When the mail carrier went to check, he found the one-year-old brown and white pittie mix tethered tightly and missing one of her legs. Bella had been tethered to a steel cable that had been wrapped around her back left leg, which she apparently chewed off. No food or water was found as Bella cried out in pain where she had been left behind in a pile of dirt and debris.

Although Bella has had numerous offers for adoption, great care and thought had to be given because of the psychological trauma she had endured. Bella also has shown to be overly protective of food

According to MLive, the best solution and the most promising place for her rehabilitation was to be Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

We narrowed it down to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. They’re a nationally renowned organization. In researching it, we felt that program they have available might be the exact treatment plan that would help her. This is unprecedented … that we were able to get a dog placed there. We are so grateful.”

Saginaw County Animal Care and Control Director Bonnie Kanicki

Bella will be placed at Dogtown, described by Best Friends as an “oasis of healing, love and happiness that is designed to meet each dog’s particular needs.” In 2021, Dogtown took in 1,584 dogs. Bella is expected at the Dogtown on Dec. 14; Animal Control Officers Desiree Sage and Abbe Balderstone will drive Bella to her new home.

Animal Control has requested a warrant for the person alleged to be responsible for Bella’s mistreatment, although no charges have been announced yet.

Whether Bella will ever be ready to be adopted remains to be seen, but in the meantime, she will receive lots of love, therapy and attention she so deserves. For all of the people sending in adoption requests, the applications will all be forwarded to Best Friends Animal Society for future consideration.
