Imagine the fear and pain; a beloved dog, injured and alone, stranded on train tracks for three days after he was hit by a train. This was the harrowing reality faced by a courageous canine in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. Thankfully, this story doesn’t end in tragedy, but in an incredible display of resilience and rescue.
The ordeal began on March 27 when the dog was struck by a train. Train engineer Mike Howell, believing the worst, continued on his route, but fate intervened. Three days later, while on a routine run, Howell spotted the dog still on the tracks, remarkably alive, but was stuck between the tracks.
According to the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office, Wagoner Police Department Captain B. Harding arrived a short time later to assist with rescuing the animal. It was determined there was no way a patrol unit could get to the location of the dog, so they requested the Sheriff’s Office Side by Side to the location to transport the injured dog to the veterinary hospital. Fortunately, help arrived quickly.
Deputy Hutton and Lt. Halfacre were successful in removing the animal from the railroad tracks. Upon arriving back at the roadway, a family member took possession of the dog and transported it to a local veterinary for treatment.
Despite its injuries, which reportedly included a broken leg and the loss of an eye, the dog had clung to life.
News of the dog’s plight and perseverance spread quickly. Everyone wanted to know more about the brave pup, and did it have a home? Thankfully, the power of social media played a role in reuniting this furry fighter with his family.
It was discovered that the animal had been injured by a train three days prior to being located and could not free itself. The Sheriff’s Office was pleased that the dog was located and hopes for a full recovery for the injured canine. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Wagoner Police Department for their assistance.
This story serves as a potent reminder of the incredible strength animals possess. It also highlights the compassion of people like Mike Howell and the police and sheriff officers, whose vigilance and quick action saved a life.
