Officer John Smith of the Lewiston Police Department in Lewiston, New York is not only a hero to his fellow humans, but also to our four-legged citizens in desperate need. On Wednesday, Officer Smith spotted a 10-month-old Labrador retriever puppy stranded on a partially frozen lake.
According to the Lewiston Police Department’s Facebook page, the pup named Kona fell through the ice.
The dog’s owner sent the email to Police Chief Frank Previte expressing his gratitude for saving his dog.
On 12-5-21 at approximately 1200 hrs, a friend and I were walking our dogs off leash (guilty and remorseful) in Bond Lake Park. She is a 10 month old Lab and usually stays close by the senior dog but instinct kicked in when a flock of geese landed in the middle of the lake. The afternoon took a horrible turn when Kona took off and ran 75 yards onto the ice and fell in where the ice ended and the water began. Although she is a strong swimmer, there was zero chance of her getting back out onto the ice and she began to panic and tire quickly.
Without hesitating, Officer Smith removed his vest and gun belt and carefully made his way out onto the ice. Kona, who weighs 75 pounds, was pulled to safety by the officer.
And if this rescue makes you proud of this outstanding officer, back in October, Smith pulled an elderly woman to safety from her burning home. The woman had stayed in the home looking for her husband who fortunately had already escaped.
Check out the video – stop by the Lewiston Police Department’s Facebook page and thank Officer Smith for a job well done.
