A scared, homeless dog shocked everyone this past weekend when he leapt over the side of the interstate and fell off the 20-foot overpass before hitting the sidewalk below. Miraculously, the dog survived the fall.
According to the Kentucky Humane Society, Griffin and Abigail McGreevy had been on their way to work when they spotted a large dog running down the interstate dangerously dodging oncoming traffic. The couple stopped their vehicle along with other Good Samaritans wanting to help and corral the scared dog when the unthinkable occurred:
Scared and panicked, the dog leapt over the side of the interstate and fell off the 20 foot overpass before hitting the sidewalk below. Onlookers watched in horror as the dog came flying towards the ground and upon impact with the sidewalk, the McGreevy’s quickly ran to see if the dog was still alive. To their amazement, the dog was injured, but had miraculously survived the fall. After calling for help, the McGreevy’s and other animal lovers who witnessed the scene, stayed to soothe the dog until help arrived.
Animal control officers from Louisville Metro Animal Services arrived and transported the dog back to their shelter hoping the owner would arrive. Since his injuries were not life threatening, he was kept for the mandatory hold period, however no one showed up to claim him. He has since been moved to the Kentucky Humane Society and has been given the care he so desperately needs.
Welcome the nearly 100-pound St. Bernard, now named Ludwig Van Beethoven who arrived seemingly in a lot of pain. After x-rays were taken, it was found he suffers from a broken femur and three broken metacarpal bones that will require surgical repair estimated to exceed $7,000.
This surgery is more than KHS’ monthly budget for offsite veterinary care, but Ludwig has been through so much already that we really want to see him walk away from this tragedy with all four of his legs intact. We immediately scheduled for Ludwig to have the surgery he needs and he is at the hospital now being prepped. If you would like to help Ludwig and other animals like him, please consider making a donation to the Kentucky Humane Society
