Last summer, a dog named Betty was lost in the midst of the Bootleg fire in Beatty, Oregon. Her owner, Tammie Broggin, had been staying at a cabin in July when the order to evacuate came in. She loaded up six of her dogs into her car to escape, but Betty did not make it in. Broggin returned to the area when it was safe, but Betty was nowhere to be found; Broggin presumed that she had died.
But Betty was alive – earlier this month, she turned up 150 miles away from where she disappeared. As reported by Central Oregon Daily News, a woman in Bend, Oregon, found Betty in her garden. The dog was taken to the Central Oregon Humane Society where a microchip was found…leading staff to phone Broggin with unexpected and wonderful news.
On February 23, the animal welfare agency wrote:
Despite the frigid temperatures, our hearts were warmed as we reunited a dog that survived the Bootleg wildfire in Klamath Falls, and was found 150 miles away in Bend, OR. It has been eight months since her ‘mom’ was forced to evacuate without her. We wish Betty, the six year old dog could tell us how she made it to Bend.
We set our sights to the sky when trying to find transportation for Betty from Bend to Blythe, CA, where her owner currently is.
Explaining how good Samaritans offered to help reunite Betty with her owner in California:
We met Nelson Carrick of Leading Edge Jet Center during the arrival of our 49 animals from Louisiana in September. We asked Nelson if he could help us come up with a way to fly Betty 1,000 miles south to Blythe, CA – and he did! Wings of Rescue pilots, Kale and Anji, were happy to add Betty’s reunion flight to their schedule.
Pilot Angela Keeling tells the news agency:
It’s a great day to go for a flight and a great day to get Betty home, it’s something we love to do is combine our passion of flying with our passion of animals. It’s our two top favorite things to do.”
Broggin is grateful to those who helped bring her pup back home, and Betty is happy to be back too.
