On Tuesday morning, nearly 60 dogs were seized from property in Hollywood, South Carolina, after the owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for them. In a news release, the Charleston Animal Society explained that the dogs were being held at a rescue operation:
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a citizen complaint in Hollywood, SC, where dozens of dogs were being kept outside and inside a residence that was set up as a dog rescue operation. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the homeowner had been hospitalized and was unable to care for the dogs.
After securing a warrant, the sheriff’s office was able to seize 57 dogs, of various breeds and sizes, from the property. All but nine of the dogs were placed in the care of the Charleston Animal Society. Pearl Sutton, Charleston Animal Society’s Chief Lifesaving Officer, commented on the influx of dogs at the shelter:
“Like most other open-admission shelters across the state, we are already overcapacity with adult dogs, but our dedicated staff are working tonight to build additional kennels for these dogs.”
The condition of the dogs is being determined; at this time, there are no criminal charges. The animal welfare agency stated:
“In this case, a concerned citizen picked up the phone and did the right thing,” Sutton said. “If you see an animal you’re concerned about, call the police. In Charleston County, that number is (843) 743-7200.”
