Golden retriever and a deer have been friends for more than a decade

For the last 11 years, a golden retriever and a deer have been the best of friends. Lorrie Brown, from Branson, Missouri, has been watching the friendship between the oddest of couples continue to flourish for years.

Let’s look back to 12 years ago, when Lorrie had been notified by a friend they had rescued a small fawn whose mother had been killed on the road. The friends were not able to care for the little one and asked for Lorrie’s help. Lorrie really didn’t know how to care for a baby deer, but she lovingly took on the challenge.

Every two hours she would feed the baby named Buttons, using an eyedropper. As the fawn grew up, she graduated to a baby bottle to nurse, and although she would wander a bit further every day closer to the forest, at night she would always return to her home.

One year later a golden retriever puppy, named G-bro arrived to become part of the family. Before long the pup and Buttons started hanging out together. According to the Dodo, Lorrie wanted Buttons to be part of the family, but they also wanted her to be wild. Sometimes animals do their own communicating, and G-bro and Buttons followed the family around. (Buttons thought she was a dog perhaps?)The two would lie down next to each other, groom each other and then take long, lazy naps.

As Buttons grew older, she would wander farther and farther away from home; some days she wouldn’t return, but she had her own destiny to meet. Every year, however Buttons returns to visit with G-bro and now even brings her babies with her.

Buttons will just show up at the door, and that’s when you know she wants to see her buddy. She’ll even paw at the door if you’re not answering in a timely manner.

During Covid-19, the family has made around 10 miles of trails on their land. They hike with deer, cats and dogs. In the winter, Buttons and G-bro play in the snow, walk along the trails and jump all over each other. Some times they just lie around and perhaps ponder the beauty of life and love.

What could be better than true friendship?
