Someone put two puppies into a cardboard box and abandoned them in a dumpster in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One puppy, who had a possible skull fracture, was turned over to a Penn Vet Shelter program for specialty care and the other remained with the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) where she is told daily that she is “not trash.”
On Friday morning, the animal welfare agency recounted the sad situation, writing:
It was just over a week ago that Lucky was brought to our hospital by Humane Law Enforcement Officer Welles. She had been found alongside her brother, Hope…in the trash. Inside a dumpster, inside a box, there they were – forgotten, and left to die.
But, we were going to do everything we could not to let that happen.
Lucky was in dismal condition when she first arrived…she was covered in excrement, emaciated, and severely dehydrated, and according to the shelter staff, she was “very quiet.” The shelter said, “Her official diagnosis was – emaciated body condition, hookworms, dehydration, and melena – a condition that follows gastrointestinal bleeding. Those first few hours and days were critical.”
Lucky was administered fluids and put on a refeeding plan. During the first few days, her chances of surviving were unknown, and she struggled. The shelter writes, “she had trouble maintaining her body temperature because she was so debilitated. Despite heat support, any time she was moved, her temperature would drop. We added another medication to the list – this one to increase blood pressure.”
But the medication, food, and care paid off. Lucky has turned the corner, she is off of her IV fluids, and her sole mission is to gain weight. According to her care providers, she is “very happy” and no longer quiet.
Elianna, PSPCA hospital nurse said, “We tell her every day; she is not trash. She is a treasure.”
