In Cleveland, Texas, the cruelty to dogs remains unexplainable. Every day dogs are injured, abused and killed, and for that reason ThisIsHouston refuse to give up and bravely continue their fight to help those who cannot speak.
Spike had been only eight-weeks-old when he arrived at his new home. He had been a happy puppy, but as he watched the small children walk by after school, he couldn’t understand why they threw rocks at him, nearly blinding him in his left eye. Spike never did anything wrong – perhaps he barked, but the porch had been his home, and he stayed loyal. And when Spike was about ten-months of age, his family placed him in the backyard in a fenced area – a dog house for his home among a flock of chickens pecking for food.
One sunny day, the children brought Spike out to play in the front yard with them. It had been glorious fun until the driver of a small truck purposely struck the dog – the child playing with him only a few feet away. Spike’s broken body had been close to death when ThisIsHouston stepped in to help.
Emergency veterinarian specialists repaired the pup’s hip fracture and luxation. In addition, Spike needed one eye removed. His recovery had been nothing short of miraculous.
Spike has healed, and the 43 pound Heeler is once again playful and happy although his advocates describe him as a bit “mouthy.” He is gentle, loves the chicken pals he grew up with, is children and adult friendly and loves other dogs too. He will likely have a slight limp for the rest of his life, but he doesn’t let that bother his fun.
Spike is heartworm negative and neutered so out of state applicants will be considered. Ideally, we’d love to put him with someone who has Heeler experience.
