We never give our heroes enough praise, and today we honor two more wonderful men for going above and beyond – all in a day’s work. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, two dogs were rescued from a burning home on Monday morning thanks to the immediate actions of a police officer and a Town of Islip employee.
Tim Alver, a town employee, had been replacing a stop sign at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and Sycamore Street when he noticed smoke coming from a home nearby. He ran to the house to alert the residents of the home, but all of the doors were locked, and there was no response from inside. Tim then flagged down a passing motorist who called 911.
Third Precinct Officer Sergio Rivera arrived at the home and heard dogs barking inside. When no one answered the door, the officer kicked in the rear door and saved the dogs. Probationary Police Officer John Iaccino then entered the home to make sure no one was inside. Three chickens were also rescued during the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and it does not appear to have been criminal in nature.
