A brave tourism employee from Destination Alaska Adventure Company, along with two police officers, rescued a baby moose from drowning in what authorities called “a sure demise” last Friday at Beluga Lake in Homer, Alaska.
Spencer Warren had arrived at work preparing a floatplane for a tourist trip when he heard what he thought was an “odd sounding” bird. Moments later, he spotted a baby moose stuck between the floats of the plane and the dock. Warren’s first thought was where was the mother, since it is well-known how protective a mother moose can be about her calf. And there she was – about four-feet away from her baby looking very worried but essentially helpless considering the situation.
The baby repeatedly tried to get out of the water, but was unable to get its hooves on the top of the metal float. Warren didn’t want to get too close – obviously worried what mom would do. The poor baby just slipped and slipped trying desperately to get its footing to get out of the water and up on the deck to rejoin his mother.
It was then Warren called the police for help, and when they arrived, one officer positioned his police car between the mother moose and the floatplane to protect the other officer and Warren while they lifted the calf out of the water.
The calf had one leg sprawled out on top of the plane’s float, which ironically made the rescue efforts easier for the heroes. The men just grabbed the calf and lifted him out of the water onto the dock.
The baby was exhausted from trying to save itself, and its legs splayed out when brought to the dock, but one of the officers helped it to stand and within minutes, he was back with his mother who gently licked the water off of her baby’s shivering little body.

The brave officers commended Warren for his bravery and of course his kindness to those who cannot speak.
