A terribly neglected dog with egregious open and infected wounds located on the side of her body and her shoulder, didn’t stop the dog from slowly approaching a rescuer on a city street in St. Louis on Friday afternoon. Within minutes, her eyes, the color of the bluest sky, melted beside the human who would help to save her life. Her tail wagged; she knew she was about to be rescued.
Sources tell us she’s only ever known the name “bitch.” Rushing to our clinic now. She’s filthy, covered in fleas, looks like she’s had litter after litter. And yet she looks to us for help and shows us kindness. Unbelievable. We gave this warrior a proper name, Adira, it means strong and powerful.

Adira was rushed to the partner rescue veterinarian for Stray Rescue of St. Louis, She was sedated her injuries were cleaned and assessed. It appears it had been an abscess from a large wound. Dr. Schulz cut away as much dead muscle and tissue as she could; through three layers of muscle, all the way to her ribs and almost to her spine.
She has remained in critical condition, but survived her first night. On Saturday morning, her update made our hearts smile.
Good Morning, from Adira! Yes, she made it through the night and is surprisingly bright eyed this Saturday morning! She had a little breakfast, too. Hope this girl can continue to hang on and fight so we can give her the life she deserves. We are so impressed, grateful, and tearful for our medical team.
