Blind dog and her tiny ‘guide dog’ hoping for new home together

Admin

At the RSPCA animal rescue in Cornwall, an adorable bonded pair of dogs are hoping to find a new home together where they can be loved and love their new humans as well as each other.

Penny is a seven-year-old Shih Tzu who is blind, but her best pal, Sandy, a 10-year-old Jack Russell is never far from her side. Yes, Sandy has become Penny’s “guide dog” and keeps a close eye on her friend. When the two arrived at the shelter at the end of June 2022, they were in poor health, but fortunately these two were given second chances:

… These girls came to us through no fault of their own via our Animal Welfare Officer Anna. Sadly, they’re not in the best condition and Penny in particular has a long journey ahead of her. When Penny (Shih-Tzu x) came to us her eyes were in such a bad state that she was admitted to our local vets straight away. Sadly, she is completely blind and is now on extensive treatment for her eyes to stop them irritating her so much. Her little mate, Sandy (Chihuahua x JRT) is one nervous wreck. With some patience, care and love though, we’re sure she’ll come around soon, but for now, her blind best friend is keeping her company.

And just two months later, the care, the love and the attention Penny and Sandy received helped the pair to truly flourish:

… Penny and Sandy are ready to be adopted!

Sweet Penny (Shih-Tzu) is the more confident of the two and even though she has restricted vision, she does not let this hold her back and has a true zest for life. Sandy (JRT) has flourished since being being at the centre with us but can still be nervous around strangers and new situations. Therefore, these girls are looking for a quiet home to help them settle. When Sandy has gotten to know you, she becomes a very affectionate little dog and they will both give new owners all the love and kisses they could ever want 💙

These girls would prefer to have a home with no other pets (but this can be discussed) and could possibly live with quiet, calm, older secondary aged children

These two lovely pooches are ready, but it is more difficult to find homes for bonded dogs, and then add on a disability… If you or someone you know is ready to give these special pups a wonderful home, help them to be more confident and watch as they take in all the special sights and smells of life, please click here to apply to adopt.
