Over the Labor Day holiday, the Barber County Sheriff’s Department in Medicine Lodge, Kansas responded to a late night call from a Good Samaritan who discovered a dog running along the side of a local road. The dog led the rescuers and deputies to a tub of ten puppies in the tree line; it was obvious someone had left the family near an abandoned home to survive on their own.
At first, the mother dog was defensive as she was being protective of her puppies, but with the help of the person who found the family, patience and officers with huge hearts, they were able to win her trust and transfer all of the dogs to a holding pen for the city.
It took a village of volunteers and rescue people who coordinated efforts to transfer the mother and her puppies to the Swaney Veterinarian Clinic for a few days until a foster from Beauties and Beasts Inc. was able to bring them home.
We are grateful that they were saved before it was too late. We can’t imagine what this momma would have had to do to go through to keep her puppies alive or how confused and scared she must have been.
