Kansas City rescue fought for recovery of dog shot with crossbow

Admin

In Kansas City, Missouri, a local animal rescue organization, KC Pet Project, rallied around a canine survivor in desperate need of care. The dog, named Artemis by shelter staff, was brought in after being discovered with a crossbow bolt lodged in its side.

On April 20th, the Animal Services Department responded to a call from a local mail carrier who had encountered a distressed dog during his route. He reported that the dog had been injured by a bow and arrow and was in danger of bleeding out. Animal Services Officers were dispatched and arrived at the scene to find a female dog with a severe wound. The dog was discovered lying on a futon on the porch with an arrow lodged in her side.

The injured dog was transported to KC Pet Project, where she was immediately admitted to the organization’s veterinary clinic. The clinic staff performed emergency surgery to remove the arrow, which was determined to be from a crossbow. The procedure was intricate; the dog had lost quite a bit of blood, thus requiring the arrow to be carefully removed in multiple pieces.

Due to the incredible work performed in the vet clinic, Artemis, is alive and healing. This amazing collaboration between departments saved Artemis’s life, however, the work is not done.

Artemis was deliberately shot with a crossbow by a member of the community, and anyone with information is asked to assist in an ongoing investigation. Artemis was found in the Washington-Wheatley neighborhood of Kansas City.

If you have any information that may assist authorities in the investigation, please call the Cruelty TIPS Hotline or file a report online at https://kcpetproject.org/…/animal-cruelty-and-neglect…/

The outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming. Since the story broke, donations poured in, exceeding initial expectations. Local businesses also stepped forward, offering food, supplies, and even free grooming services for the dog once he recovered.
