It was many years ago when I accompanied my first dog to the vet to be euthanized. I cried for days, and to this day, I will never forget the kindness and compassion my veterinarian exhibited as I petted and hugged Nikki for the very last time. And when I walked out of the room after my best friend quietly passed on to the Rainbow Bridge, I spotted a candle burning on the desk of the veterinarian’s office. It was the first time I had ever seen a candle and a note hanging from the counter below; asking people coming in with their pets to be quiet and respectful because someone was putting their beloved companion to sleep.
And that’s why I took notice of a video posted on TikTok that went viral on social media this afternoon. User@Oscarthepugglelondon, showed a clip of him and his dog, at the veterinarian clinic for the pup’s annual checkup and vaccinations when he saw the lit candle and the note asking patients in the waiting room to be quiet in a sign of respect.
Humane euthanasia involves an intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital, causing gentle, painless, quick and a dignified passing. The video has garnered more than 889,000 views and some of the sweetest albeit heartbreaking comments.
