Earlier this month, a man entered a Texas shelter carrying a two-month-old puppy in his arms and told the staff he found the puppy floating in a box down the river. Although he found the puppy positively adorable, he admitted he could not afford to attend to the puppy’s medical needs.
The two-month-old black Labrador retriever mix had tested positive for parvovirus; a very contagious and often fatal virus often affecting puppies. The Good Samaritan drove two hours to bring the little one to Austin Pets Alive! intensive clinic for the treatment of parvo. The Puppy Parvo ICU is the first of its kind in the nation and has been sharing knowledge about the virus with shelters and rescues across the country hoping to save more lives.
The best way to avoid parvovirus is to vaccinate dogs and puppies. Please confirm preventative measures with your veterinarian. For more information about parvovirus, please click here.
When the puppy, since named Kayak arrived, he was lethargic, pale and was immediately hospitalized. Treatments of IV fluids, antibiotics, anti nausea and vomiting medications were administered. In addition, he was fed tiny amounts of food through a syringe.
Fortunately APA! operates one of the country’s only Parvo ICUs, and was able to treat him. Now that he’s tested negative, he’s back to his old tail wagging ways. He’s eager to learn about this big world he’s in!

Kayak’s personality has been coming out since he’s been feeling better. The staff says he likes attention and is always wagging his tail.
Kayak is ready to be your lifelong companion! This sweet puppy enjoys lounging near a river, playing in the sprinklers and playing with a frisbee. He would love to continue his training with you, and he is looking for a cozy home where he can play, snuggle and shower you with kisses. Ready to bring Kayak home?
