Iowa – A bonded pair of friends finds themself in the care of an Iowa animal shelter following the hospitalization of their owner. On Monday, The Animal Rescue League of Iowa shared the touching friendship that Penny and Buttercup have:
Penny the dog and Buttercup the cat arrived at the shelter after their owner was hospitalized with no chance of returning home. It was a heartbreaking situation, and it was also clear from the start that Penny (9 years old) and Buttercup (16 years old) shared an extremely strong bond.
Penny was distraught without her feline friend and she paced and cried until the elderly cat was brought to her. The shelter said, “once Buttercup was brought to her, she made sure her friend was OK and settled right down.”
Fortunately, the shelter staff recognized the deep bond held by Penny and Buttercup and they stated that there was “no way” that they could separate them. The duo is now in a foster home through the shelter’s Bonded Buddies program. The animal welfare agency is hopeful that there is a family who can open their home (and heart) to Penny and Buttercup. The agency writes:
If you’re looking for an exceptionally sweet dog and cat pair, look no further! Penny and Buttercup are very easy to be around and do great in the house. Some of their favorite things are watching birds, napping and being petted. They do everything together and love being by their people. They’d be wonderful companions for a mature family with a calm home.
