Tarkington father and son rescue stranded horse during floods

In the face of recent flooding, the Tarkington community witnessed an act of heroism from an unexpected duo. Local resident Chance Ward, along with his eldest son, Rowdy Ward, bravely ventured out on a rescue mission to save a horse stranded by the rising waters.

On Friday, May 3, the horse’s plight came to light thanks to Jacob Smith, owner of Smith’s Diesel Repair, and his companions. While navigating the high waters in their ATVs, they spotted the beautiful, black Friesian stud seeking refuge under a highway overpass on US 59 near Cleveland. The horse had been swept over the gates and fences of the pasture where he tried to seek higher ground. His photo soon went viral on social media; everyone who saw the stranded horse worried about his safety and subsequent survival.

According to the Facebook page of Chance Ward, the seasoned horseman, and his son set out on horseback themselves. They headed out to save the stud.

“The horse was a little nervous at first,” Chance recounted, “but once he realized we were there to help, he calmed down.” Their journey wasn’t easy. They had to traverse a two-mile round trip through floodwaters to reach the stranded animal and return it to safety.

That day the family helped about 50 head of livestock to higher ground.

Thankfully, the horse’s owner was anxiously waiting on higher ground and was overwhelmed with gratitude upon its safe return. This heartwarming rescue story exemplifies the deep connection between the Tarkington community and animals. The Ward family’s courage and quick thinking ensured a happy ending for the frightened horse.
