Phoenix, AZ – A man accused of dragging a young German shepherd behind his truck was arrested on Saturday. According to multiple sources, 43-year-old Jose Luis Popoca was observed dragging a year-old German shepherd near Central Avenue and Broadway Road on Saturday.

As reported by AZ Family, multiple people attempted to alert Popoca about the dog being dragged behind his truck but he allegedly “sped away” each time. Popoca eventually stopped and parked his vehicle and walked away, leaving the injured dog behind. When the police arrived, Popoca returned to the vehicle to remove the leash that was tethered to the truck. He claimed that he was unaware that a dog had been behind the vehicle, and that nobody tried to alert him.

The police arrested Popoca for animal cruelty and the dog was taken in by the Arizona Humane Society. She is being treated for multiple injuries on her body, especially on her legs and paws. The dog will not be available for adoption until she has fully recovered from her wounds.
