Second chance for abandoned puppy found tied in bag: Arrest made in cruelty case

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is thrilled to report positive developments in the case of Ryder, the adorable puppy found abandoned in a park last month. On Friday, May 3, Harold Dean Lilly was booked into Butler County Jail and charged with second degree misdemeanors; cruelty to a companion animal and abandoning animals

It had been on April 24th, when a concerned citizen discovered Ryder tied up in a drawstring bag at a park on Joe Nuxhall Boulevard in Hamilton. Thankfully, the kind individual brought the scared puppy to safety. Animal Friends Humane Society took Ryder in, providing him with the medical attention and TLC he desperately needed.

The three-month-old puppy had been lethargic and weak when discovered in the drawstring bag. Fortunately, he tested negative for parvo and received his vaccinations and later dewormed.

News of Ryder’s plight spread quickly, with the community rallying behind the pup. Social media posts from Animal Friends and the Sheriff’s Office garnered a significant amount of interest, along with a wave of tips.

While the legal process unfolds, Ryder continues to thrive at Animal Friends. Shelter staff report that he’s overcoming his initial ordeal and blossoming into a playful and affectionate pup. He’s received a tremendous amount of love and attention from the staff and an outpouring of interest from potential adopters.

Ryder’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the strength of our community. We’re incredibly grateful to the Sheriff’s Office and Animal Friends for their swift action, and to everyone who came forward with information.
