Othello, WA – This week, a heartbreaking show of devotion was observed by a male dog who refused to leave his canine friend who had been struck by a car near Othello, WA. Adams County Pet Rescue recounted the sad situation, writing:
Erika was driving back to the shelter on Hwy 17 when a semi truck slammed on his brakes as he tried to avoid hitting a black/white male Pitbull that was in the middle of the road. As Erika drove by she saw another Pitbull that had been hit laying on the side of the road and was still alive.
The male dog refused to let anyone get near his grievously injured friend; the woman called for assistance, but the injured dog could not be saved. The animal welfare agency said:
Shortly after she called us, the female passed away. When we got there and tried to approach, the male would start moving away into traffic and then come back to protect the female.
The holiday traffic was thick and we didn’t want to risk the male getting hit or someone getting in an accident trying to avoid him.
The faithful dog continued to watch over his friend, even after she had passed. The agency said:
With traffic slowed down, we were able to get the female off the side of the road and into the back of our vehicle. Once she was inside, the male came to the back of the vehicle to keep watch over her and once we were able to move her further into the back, he jumped in to be with her.
The shelter is hopeful that someone will come forward to claim the surviving dog, writing:
We named him Herschel Comet while we wait for his owners to hopefully contact us.
