Firefighters rescued an elderly dog trapped in a sinkhole in Hesperia, California. The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to an emergency call that reported a dog had been trapped in a sinkhole at a home.

The dog, Janie, was found in the sinkhole – approximately 15 feet deep.

Medic Engine and Truck 304 spotted Janie in good spirits and active at the bottom of the hole. The owner, who discovered his furry friend this morning, shared concerns that Janie might have been in the hole overnight.

The firefighters evaluated the hole and the best way to assess the surrounding ground. Measures were then taken to reinforce the edges and to minimize the risk of the surrounding soil falling off into the hole and further endangering the dog’s safety. Fortunately, the surrounding hazards posed no dangers to Janie or the rescuers.

One firefighter was able to enter the sinkhole using a ladder, retrieve the dog and soon was able to reunite the dog with her family. Janie was not injured and according to the firemen, was very happy to have been reunited with her owner.

We are pleased to report that Janie emerged from the sinkhole unharmed and appeared overjoyed to be reunited with her owner.
